As the year comes to a close, social media fills with highlight reels: championship photos, ribbons lined up just right, year-end awards, and big goals checked off lists. And truly, those moments deserve to be celebrated. Hard work, dedication, and countless hours in the barn lead to achievements worth being proud of.
But as we wrap up another year, I think it’s just as important to pause and celebrate the quieter victories, too.
The ones that might not come with a ribbon.
The ones that don’t make a flashy post.
The ones that mean everything to the person and horse who lived them.
Progress Doesn’t Always Look Big From the Outside
For some riders, this year’s biggest win might have been a national title.
For others, it might have been cantering for the very first time.
And both matter.
That first canter—whether it happened in a lesson, out on a quiet trail, or in a familiar arena—isn’t small. It’s a moment of trust. A leap of courage. A milestone that represents hours of learning, confidence-building, and partnership.
Horse people understand this better than anyone: progress isn’t linear, and it certainly isn’t measured only in placings.
Sometimes progress looks like:
- Sitting a spook you wouldn’t have last year
- Getting back in the saddle after time away
- A horse staying relaxed instead of tense
- A ride that simply felt good
Those wins count. They always have.
Gratitude for the Horses Who Carry Us There
None of these achievements, big or small, happen without our horses.
They meet us where we are on any given day. They carry our nerves, our excitement, our frustration, and our joy. They forgive imperfect cues, teach us patience, and somehow always know when we need them most.
They don’t care about year-end standings or social media posts.
They care about consistency, kindness, and clarity.
And yet, because of them, we grow.
We become braver. More disciplined. More present. More resilient.
Our horses allow us to accomplish things we once thought were out of reach—sometimes physically, sometimes emotionally, and often both.
A Season of Thankfulness
As we reflect on the year behind us, I hope we all take a moment to acknowledge every step forward, no matter how small it may seem.
Celebrate the firsts.
Celebrate the comebacks.
Celebrate the quiet progress that only you and your horse truly understand.
And most of all, be thankful for the horses who make all of it possible.
At the end of the year, the ribbons may fade, but the partnership, growth, and gratitude we carry forward are what truly last.
A Small Invitation
As we close out the year, I’d love to hear about your little wins, but especially the ones that may not feel big enough to shout about.
Did you canter for the first time?
Load quietly after a tough season?
Step back into the saddle after time away?
Have a ride that finally felt calm and connected?
Share your little wins. In the comments, in a message, or with someone who understands what they mean. Because every step forward matters, and celebrating them together is one of the best parts of this horse community.
Here’s to honoring the progress, the partnership, and the horses who make it all possible 🤍🐎
