At the end of the day, we all show horses because we love the horses. The smell of the barns, the quiet morning schooling sessions, the thrill of hearing your number called: it’s all because of the connection we have with these amazing animals. If I’ve learned anything over the years, it’s that the people around you can shape those experiences just as much as the horses do.
Good friends make the long show days lighter. They’re the ones holding your horse when you need a moment, helping you polish boots before your class, or cheering you on from the rail even if you missed a lead or had a tough ride. They remind you that every show, every class, every ride is part of a bigger journey. It’s one you don’t have to take alone.
Horses already humble us, test us, and teach us patience. The right people help you enjoy those lessons. They celebrate your wins, laugh with you when your horse decides to add a little something extra to a class (like when one of mine decided demonstrating lead changes when not asked was a great idea), and reassure you when things don’t go as planned. Together, they turn what could be a stressful, competitive environment into something that feels supportive, inspiring, and fun.
I’ve realized how much your circle influences your mindset in the saddle, too. When you’re surrounded by positivity, it’s easier to focus on your partnership with your horse instead of comparing yourself to others. You ride lighter, think clearer, and remember why you started in the first place.
Thankfully, I’ve been incredibly lucky to have a great group of friends who make every show feel special. I haven’t had to cut anyone out, but I’ve seen how much peace it brings others when they finally do. Sometimes, choosing to step away from negativity is the best thing you can do for both your happiness and your horse’s.
Because while the horses are always the heart of it all, the right friends make every show just a little brighter and every memory a lot more meaningful.
