Though this blog usually centers around horse life and barn favorites, I couldn’t pass up the chance to share a few recent reads that have seriously brightened my year. Reading has always been my personal escape — a lifeline during seasonal slumps, a distraction when life gets heavy, and a spark of joy when I just need something fun. So here are four book favorites from the past year that brought me comfort, entertainment, and just the right amount of magic.

Shield of Sparrows by Devney Perry

If we’ve talked about books recently, there’s a good chance I’ve already mentioned this one to you — I’m that obsessed. Even months later, I still find myself thinking about Odessa and the mysterious Guardian. The fantasy world is immersive and rich, with layers of lore that feel original and captivating. There’s a beautiful blend of magic, romance, and character growth, all wrapped in Devney Perry’s emotional storytelling. The only downside? I’m impatiently waiting for the next book to drop!

Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros

Okay, yes — this is book three in The Empyrean series. And yes, you absolutely need to read Fourth Wing and Iron Flame first (trust me, you won’t regret it). I know BookTok has been buzzing nonstop about this series, but there’s a reason for the hype. Onyx Storm dives even deeper into the world of dragon riders, political tension, and messy-but-beautiful character arcs. What I love most is how the characters grow — even when their evolution is uncomfortable. There’s action, love, heartbreak, and those little moments that make you audibly gasp. It’s intense in the best way.

The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

This series is pure fun. Imagine a teenage girl suddenly inheriting a billionaire’s fortune — instead of his own family — and being dropped into a world of puzzles, secrets, and rivalries. It’s got mystery, light romance, and just the right amount of drama. Yes, it’s a little over-the-top at times, but that’s the charm! I flew through all three books and loved every second. Think of it as a perfect vacation or beach read — light, fast-paced, and a total serotonin boost.

Quicksilver by Callie Hart

This one completely surprised me in the best way. Based on the cover alone, I wasn’t expecting to love it — but I was hooked almost immediately. The writing isn’t trying to be overly great, and that’s okay. What it does offer is a wildly original magic system, a captivating storyline, and a pace that never lets up. It’s mysterious, quirky, and filled with moments that had me flipping pages late into the night. Yes, there’s no sequel yet — but if you love something fresh and different, this one’s worth diving into now.
